Early Life and Education

Satya Narayana Nadella was born on 19 August 1967 in Hyderabad, India, to a civil servant father and a Sanskrit lecturer mother. Growing up in a middle-class home, he developed a deep appreciation for education and curiosity. Although he attended Hyderabad Public School, his early ambition was to become a professional cricketer. Nadella later pursued a degree in electrical engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology before moving to the United States, where he earned a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

Path to Microsoft

Nadella began his career at Sun Microsystems but soon joined Microsoft in 1992, where he worked on building Windows NT. Over the next two decades, he rose through several key leadership roles, including Vice President of the bCentral small-business service, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Business Solutions, and President of the Server and Tools division. His leadership in cloud technologies played a major role in transforming Microsoft’s enterprise services, ultimately preparing him for the top role.

Becoming CEO and Transforming Microsoft

Satya Nadella became CEO of Microsoft on 4 February 2014, during a time of internal conflict and declining innovation. He introduced a new culture centered on empathy, collaboration, and a “growth mindset.” Nadella shifted Microsoft’s focus to cloud computing, transforming Azure into a global leader. He spearheaded major acquisitions including LinkedIn, GitHub, Minecraft, and Activision Blizzard. His bold partnership with OpenAI—starting with a $1 billion investment—positioned Microsoft as a dominant player in the AI revolution.

Leadership Philosophy and Personal Journey

Nadella’s leadership style is deeply shaped by his personal life, especially his experience raising his son Zain, who had cerebral palsy and passed away in 2022. This taught him that empathy is “the hardest and most important skill” for any leader. His emphasis on empathy influenced Microsoft’s renewed focus on accessibility, inclusion, and responsible AI. Nadella and his wife Anupama support multiple healthcare initiatives and donated $15 million to Seattle Children’s Hospital in honor of their son.

Under Nadella, Microsoft’s value rose from under $400 billion to more than $3 trillion, making it one of the world’s most valuable companies. He also became Executive Chairman in 2021.
