While Apple’s iPhone currently supports texting, contacting emergency services, and reaching roadside assistance through satellite connectivity, the tech giant is developing numerous additional satellite-powered capabilities, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Features currently in development reportedly include an API that would enable app developers to integrate satellite connections into their applications, a version of Apple Maps designed to function without cellular or WiFi connectivity, the ability to attach photos to messages, and enhanced support for “natural usage”—allowing users to establish satellite connections without needing to aim their phones directly at the sky.
These capabilities would significantly expand iPhone functionality when users find themselves beyond the reach of conventional cellular networks. Another prospective enhancement, first reported by The Information, could strengthen 5G networks by enabling them to link with satellites for broader coverage.
Basic features would remain free of charge, Gurman notes, while users would pay their carriers for more sophisticated functionality. Additionally, Apple’s satellite partner Globalstar reportedly must upgrade its infrastructure to accommodate these new features, with Apple providing financial support for the improvements.
