LinkedIn has introduced an AI-powered people search feature that allows users to find professionals using conversational queries rather than traditional keyword searches. Instead of relying on exact job titles, company names, or complex filter combinations, users can now type requests in plain English such as “find me investors in the healthcare sector with FDA experience” or “who in my network can help me understand wireless networks.” The feature follows the AI-powered job search tool introduced earlier this year, which allows users to describe their ideal position rather than filtering through specific titles or locations. This represents a significant shift in how professionals discover connections on the platform, making networking more intuitive and accessible.

How the Technology Works and Its Current Availability

The feature combines LinkedIn’s existing professional dataset—including profile information, roles, skills, and experience—with AI models to identify members who fit the described criteria. The system interprets natural language prompts and connects them to relevant experience and backgrounds listed on user profiles, even when exact keywords aren’t present. LinkedIn is rolling out AI-powered people search to premium users in the United States with plans to expand it to other geographies in the coming months. Users with access will see “I’m looking for…” displayed in the search bar instead of the traditional “Search” prompt, signaling the availability of this conversational search capability.

Addressing Limitations While Unlocking Network Value

The search tool isn’t perfect, with different results appearing when using queries like “people who co-founded a YC startup” compared to “Y Combinator,” and the company is working on improving how the search tool understands queries. Despite these early challenges, the feature addresses a longstanding problem with LinkedIn’s traditional search functionality.
